15 Ways to Save Money + Green Up Your Office

Post-Its can be permanent items in your office layout

One of the smartest things you can do for your office is green it up. You'll end up saving energy and material costs, not to mention feeling better. Here are things you can do right now to get it going.

Paper Products

Always buy recycled: Most major office retailers offer recycled copy and printing paper. Staples  has 100% recycled copy paper which is not bleached with chlorine, and costs only a fraction more  than the traditional stuff. You may notice that recycled paper is not as blindingly white as its new- produced counterparts, but that incremental difference in tone prevents thousands of gallons of  pollution from entering our environment. 
Print on both sides. It seems so simple, but you’ll halve your waste paper output, and save money  in the bargain. 
Recycle every last scrap. Keep a catch-all beside or beneath your desk to hold all your waste  paper, including paper and cardboard packaging for other office supplies like pens and ink  cartridges. You can even recycled shredded paper; although it can’t go out on the curb, it can  usually be dropped off in the paperboard area. Check with your local recycling facility for details. 
Reuse filing folders, envelopes, and other paper storage. A new label can make an old manila file  folder like new again.  
Avoid PVC: Polyvinyl Chloride (a.k.a. vinyl, #3 plastics) is used in many office products, including 3- ring binders, clipboards, even mouse pads. But the fumes it emits contain phthalates, dioxins,  and mercury, and have been linked to birth defects, cancer, and reproductive ailments. When  shopping for new file storage, choose metal over toxic PVC plastics, or recycle old appliance or  electronics boxes into file storage. 
Reuse Your Reminders: Instead of sticky notes or memo pads, consider a dry-erase board for your  ‘notes to self’. Mount it on a wall where you can see it clearly. If you’re really attached to your  post-its, just make sure that each little square finds its way into your recycling bin.

Pens and pencils

Pens cannot yet be recycled, so buy refillable fountain or ball-point pens. Again, seems simple,  but you’ll literally save pounds of plastic per year by tossing only those little ink cartridges and  not the whole pen. 
Using refillable automatic pencils helps to save trees, and can save you money. 
Indulge; purchase a nice set of writing tools, or give one as a gift. They’re fun to write with, use  very little plastic, and are a great incentive to use refills.

Printer cartridges

Many big-box office supply stores have refilling and recycling programs for ink-jet and laser  cartridges. Bring in your old cartridges for a discount on your purchase. If your local office supply  store doesn’t offer recycling, ask how to get your cartridges refilled. 
If your company doesn’t participate in recycling programs, call your city or county recycling facility  for information about how to dispose of cartridges properly: they shouldn’t be mixed in with the  rest of your trash.

Batteries

Every year, Americans alone throw away 180,000 tons of batteries, and many of them end up in  landfills, leaching heavy metals and caustic chemicals into our soil and groundwater. Don't just  toss your batteries in the garbage: check with your local recycling or hazardous waste facility for  information about how to dispose of them properly. Other office supplies

Paper clips and binder clips can be reused indefinitely. Make sure to remove them and return  them to their home before tossing those papers in the recycling bin. 
CDs and floppy discs can, and should, be recycled. Call your recycling facility for more information,  or visit GreenDisk: they recycle all kinds of office supplies, and their Techotrash Cans – techno- waste receptacles that double as shipping containers – are great to have around. They also  retail office supplies made from the items they recycle. 
Shipping and address labels can be a big waste of paper. Most newer word processing software  programs allow you to print addresses right on your envelopes.
 Little changes can make a big difference. And you'll feel good about helping the earth when you green  up

Kuumba Made

I had the extreme pleasure of trying out a variety of Kuumba Made products.
Water Goddess (scent) Lotion, Bath Oil, Bath Salts and perfume; Twilight Shimmers lip balm, Breathe Deep chest rub, and Herbal Healing Salve. All of these products were absolutely tremendous in every category.

Scent - The Water Goddess scent in the lotion, bath oil, perfume and bath salts was luxurious and enticing. The scent was like walking on the beach on a blooming spring evening. There is a slight floral and musk that mingles together to create a relaxing experience.

The Herbal Healing Salve smells like an herb garden. It almost has a very soft patchouli smell, which could be attributed to the Echinacea. It's very faint and not at all overwhelming. If you had a burn on your nose, the scent would not irritate.

The breathe deep chest rub was a lifesaver during my last bout of strep throat. It has this peppermint/lemon/rosemary smell that reminds me of my favorite soothing tea. Smelling it now, I wish I could drink it! It's a creamy smooth scent that opens up the sinuses without the harshness of most chest rubs like VapoRub.

Quality - The herbal healing salve was perfect for tattoo aftercare as well as the occasional booboo. In fact, my lips just ripped during a violent sneeze a few minutes ago, and the salve has soothed the stinging burn. The fact that it is organic makes me confident about applying it to my lips.

The Water Goddess lotion was a lifesaver last winter. I was in Boston, and the wind can get so biting cold that it feels like it is ripping your skin off. It was gentle enough to use on my face, but strong enough to where I didn't have to reapply every few minutes.

The Boston winter also affected my lips and the lip shimmers quickly became my go-to lip balm. It soothed my dry cracked lips and added just a hint of color. The last tinted lip balm I tried was Burt's Bees and that one made my lips look like it was stained by Kool Aid. Twilight Lip Shimmers was subtle and realistic.

Overall, Kuumba Made has become my favorite bath and body brand. If they made shampoo and body wash, then my bathroom needs would be set! I'm excited to try out their other scents.

I'm currently in the beginning stages of writing a second edition to this book. Why a second edition you ask? Well, technology is constantly changing and improving and I want to make sure that I am presenting the most accurate information possible to my readers. In addition, the book includes a large online resources section, and there are many new and exciting businesses and organizations that I want to add. In light of new information about their products, there will also be some businesses that I will remove. I also want to add a few new chapters including a section for the "Eco-dude" in the Eco-Babe's life.

Green Wine Guide: Medlock Ames' Organic Vineyard Features Mini Cows and a Century-Old Biker Bar

Medlock Ames is an organic and sustainable winery nestled upon Bell Mountain in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley. Sheltered from the fog of the nearby Pacific Ocean, the valley is one of Northern California's warmest wine regions. But gentle coastal breezes do find their way in. And those breezes, along with cool air from the Russian River, give the valley low nighttime temperatures and an extended growing season. Medlock Ames has a holistic approach to winemaking that not only considers land use but also community. That's where a reclaimed biker bar and the use of both wild and farm animals such miniature cows come in to play. From microclimates to miniature cows, Medlock Ames accomplishes its biggest goal: creating wine with a complete sense of place.

The winery, which was started in 1998, was founded by lifelong friends Christopher Medlock and Ames Morison. They scouted hundreds of vineyards throughout California before happening upon the estate at Bell Mountain. The estate, which is closed to the public, is without the obligatory villa you'll find at most wineries. Totaling over 400 acres, the hillside property is rustic, oak-covered and punctuated by a modern gravity-flow production facility.
Gravity flow is a very gentle method of winemaking where wine is moved by gravity from fermentation to barreling. The lack of mechanics (and agitation) helps preserve the wine's more delicate notes. This process also reduces energy consumption. For example, the wine's final destination--the cellar--is underground where aging can take place without the need for artificial climate control. The gravity flow facility is also home to a 84 kWh solar system which provides 100% of its electricity needs.

Only 50 acres of the estate are actually used for agriculture -- the remainder has been left intentionally untouched to better the neighboring wildlife preserve. The vineyard and garden are 100% organic, so no pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used. Though this approach did contribute to a gopher and rodent problem early on for the vineyard, that was rectified with the installation of 50-something owl boxes. Wild barn owls quickly took to the structures and began, well, feasting. Bat boxes occupy the property's woodland areas providing a similar effect.Other visitors from the preserve include wild pigs, deer, bobcats and mountain lions. Conventionally, high fences would be built to keep out such intruders. Unfortunately, that can also trap them, which can be a danger to the vines, its workers and the animals themselves. So the winery has built corridors throughout the property that allows the animals to traverse the vineyard without bringing about the dangerous side effects.
Unwanted weeds are tended to by sheep and miniature cows, which are not as tiny as they might sound (I immediately wanted one). The animal-powered weed whackers not only reduce tractor usage but they also provide natural fertilizer. A lot of natural fertilizer!

But the uniqueness of the Bell Mountain ranch extends way beyond the grapes.
Even native and wild yeasts are used during fermentation, giving the wine an extended sense of place. And if you want to taste this wine--which you do--then you will have to head to the recently opened tasting room located a few miles from Bell Mountain.

Turning a century-old biker bar to into tasting room

The tasting room itself has a simplicity to it that echoes the ranch at Bell Mountain. No fancy imported olives or overpriced picnic-ware are found there. Just good wine and canned produce from the garden. Located at the intersection of Alexander Valley Road and Highway 128, the Medlock Ames tasting room has been a neighborhood fixture since the early 1900s when it was known as the Alexander Valley Store and Bar. The bar part was added on later during the '60s where it became a favorite amongst the Easy Rider crowd. And that history exists in more than just spirit at the new tasting location. Reclaimed wood from the original structure was used and they even opened an actual bar. When the wine tasting ends, the seasonally-inspired cocktails begin!
Miniature cows and biker bars aside, what really makes Medlock Ames stand out is the wine. It's a paradox. It's frank with intense aromas, as is characteristic of California wines, yet still delicate and subtle at the same time. Their 2008 Rosé truly displays these characteristics and holds the honor of being the only Rosé I have ever liked. The wine is unfiltered adding a foggy depth to the Kool-Aid-esque pink, a characteristic that is best observed when the wine has been properly chilled. Ripe strawberries dominate both the nose and palate followed by hints of citrus and sunshine. If you're not quite ready for Fall, this 2008 Rosé by Medlock Ames will take you back to Summer.

The Bags

I received the Lily Pad tote, and it's definitely the strongest tote I've had in a long time. I was able to transport a watermelon without fear of the bag ripping. It's made of organic cotton that was grown in the USA, and the bag is assembled in the USA. So if you are looking to shop local this is the way to go. It's a little on the small side, so I definitely recommend it as a book bag, as opposed to a shopping bag. However, don't despair, Earth to Gert offers bags in several sizes, so your sure to find one that suits your needs. It's strong enough to handle even the heaviest biology book, without tearing on the book corners. The design is attractive and printed with eco-inks, and will definitely garner favorable comments from your friends. The story behind the image is also a great conversation starter. The Scrubbies

This has to be my favorite product out of those offered on the site. The Eco-Scrubbies are reusable scrubbing cloths for washing dishes, cleaning house, etc. There isn't much information about them on their site, as far as I can tell but these are a reusable. Whenever they start to get a bit funky, you can just toss them in the wash. I've been using mine to wash dishes for over six months now and it's almost as good as new. It has enough roughness to clean my dirtiest pan, but not too much as to scratch. So, compared to sponges, this is definitely the way to go. They don't fall apart, and can be washed to avoid "nasty sponge" syndrome. These scrubbies are free with purchase.

The Cards

These are beautiful cards that are also eco-friendly. Nice images printed on quality paper make this a wonderful gift for anyone who enjoys ol' fashioned letter writing. The cards are made of sugar cane pulp and recycled paper fibers and the envelopes are made of hemp. They are packaged in a compostable plastic wrap and made in the USA. They are so lovely, I wanted to learn calligraphy, just to do them justice.

Lusa Organics Ylang Ylang And Lavender Goat Milk Soap

I have been using this soap for a few weeks now and I absolutely love it. I've tried other eco-bar soaps before and they didn't leave me feeling very clean. This one suds up great, even with a loufa or scrub brush. It rinses clean away and doesn't leave a slimy film behind. Oh and the smell...absolute heaven.

I was using a liquid soap before and it left my skin dry and itchy. The lusa organics goat milk soap has ended that drama. Now I don't have to apply lotion the moment I get out of the shower. My skin is soft, smooth and feels great now.

Everytime I get into the shower, it's like one of those commercials where you see the woman smelling the product, sighing and then having a out of body experience. The ylang ylang and lavender goat milk soap sends me to a warm, misty waterfall in a fragrant wild flower filled meadow in the middle of an enchanted mossy forest.

What I love the most is the website gives you the option to buy the soap, but without the packaging. So you save some money and the environment too.

I have nothing but rave reviews for this product. It smells absolutely wonderful. I can't help but to sniff my pits! Even my husband can't help but to snuggle up to enjoy the lemony scent. The best part is, it really works! My underarms have never felt better. It's made out of Organic Beeswax, Organic cocoa butter, organic soybean oil, organic lemongrass essential oil, and organic rosemary essential oil. The creator, Stephanie Greenwood is so confident in her wonderful deodorants that she guarantees you will be satisfied. I love to support women-owned businesses, and this one is definitely in my top 5. I look forward to reviewing more of her products.

Dr. Bronner's - Product Review

Dr. Bronner's Organic Shikakai Spearmint Peppermint Body Soap And Citrus Conditioning Hair Rinse

This product is advertised as having 18 uses. You are able to not only brush your teeth, but wash your hair and body. I've used this product as a body wash and shampoo for several weeks now and I'm still undecided. To really get a feel for a shampoo, you should use it for at least 2 weeks. Each person will react differently to a shampoo based on the type of hair they have. I have wavy, brown hair that tends to have fly-aways. It's not normally greasy. I've used it for about a month now and initially my hair was awful. It was thick, stringy, tangly and greasy after I washed it. I was forced to keep it in a bun. I then tried using their hair rinse and things did get better. It was instantaneous the results. As I poured the rinse over my hair, I felt it detangle and soften. With the rinse, I can finally brush my hair and wear it down. It still feels a little oily, as if I have some sort of styling product in my hair. I love the smell of the citrus rinse. I will keep using these products and if things get better, I may consider using them from now on. But if my hair stays oily, I will switch to something else. I imagine these products would be great for people with thick, stringy, dry, curly or dreaded hair.

EDIT-September 30, 2010: I actually switched to a different shampoo with the Citrus Hair Rinse and now everything is working perfectly. If you have think "latina" hair, try Bubble and Bee Peppermint and Tea Tree shampoo with the Dr. Bronner's Citrus Hair Rinse. This combination doesn't leave me with the greasy feeling I was experiencing with the Shikakai Shampoo.
